Understanding The Importance Of Group Communication

â€Å"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has† (Meade, 2009). Understanding the importance of group communication can be critical to conflict resolution. The old adage of â€Å"two heads are better than one† certainly rings true when working to resolve an issue. By bringing a group of interested, dedicated people together to solve a problem, the chances of a successful resolution are dramatically increased. A great leader possesses the ability of conflict resolution and great decision making skills. Knowing what one’s strengths and weaknesses are can promote successful group communication as well as positive decision making. Knowing how to identify the factors and break down the problem can help the group efficiently work together to resolve the issue. Breaking conflict resolution down into two separate categories: Identifying the conflict and making decisions as to how to best handle the conflict can simplify the process. The culture in America is predominately individualistic (Harms, 2007). In addition to being an individualistic society, most Americans are known for avoiding conflict whenever possible (Eilerman, 2006). Conflict occurs several times in one’s day to day life. Mastering the techniques and methods of conflict management and being able to determine the type of conflict, what the desirable outcome of the conflict is, is an extremely beneficial asset to have.
